Movies to watch with the family on a couch and blanket afternoon this fall

Fall is a perfect time to enjoy watching movies with the family. The days are cooler and shorter, inviting a pleasant afternoon snuggled up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate while it rains and gets cold outside. Especially if we choose movies set in autumn, this wonderful season filled with golden hues and covered in dry leaves.

Today, SaveFamily brings you a series of movie recommendations you can watch with your family this fall.

  • The Harry Potter saga
The Harry Potter film series is, without a doubt, a hit for a family marathon this fall. The story takes place during the school year, making it very appropriate for this time of year, and the setting is also very autumnal. This young wizard with round glasses needs no introduction. But just in case, this saga tells the story of Harry Potter, a young wizard who, at the age of 11, begins his first year at Hogwarts, the best school of witchcraft and wizardry. Harry will be entrusted with an important mission: to destroy Lord Voldemort, the Dark Lord, and save the wizarding world from destruction.

The most autumnal of all is the third installment, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." And to make the marathon even more fun, you can turn it into a Harry Potter party. Everyone can dress in their Hogwarts house colors, decorate the living room, and try the food featured in the films. Who dares to try some Mystery Beans? They come in all flavors (literally).

  • The Addams Family
The Addams Family is a favorite family to watch this time of year. They could already be considered a fall and Halloween classic for children (and adults alike). Their peculiarities, adventures, and (somewhat macabre) facets will make you enjoy a family afternoon, and even make you laugh out loud.

The Addams Family has had dozens of adaptations over the years, but arguably the most popular and iconic are those from the 1990s. In its first installment in 1991, the Addamses, a gothic and macabre family, risk losing their treasure of gold coins to Tully Alford, a dishonest lawyer who the Addamses are clients and is now in serious financial difficulties.

But you've already seen the '90s versions a million times. This fall, director Tim Burton brings a new Addams Family series to Netflix. This time, it focuses on Wednesday Addams, who is now a teenager and must face high school. But after being expelled, she is placed in an institution for more special children.

  • Hocus Pocus, Hocus Pocus
Autumn is also synonymous with Halloween. We can enjoy scary stories, featuring creatures like witches, ghosts, and vampires. And "Hocus Pocus" is a classic that never fails to be shown every October.

Three hundred years ago, three witches were sentenced to death in Salem, but a boy turned them into black cats. In the middle of Halloween, they accidentally returned thanks to Max, who was exploring the ruins of his old house. Their goal is to make their plan of immortality a reality, but if they don't recite the spell before dawn, they will die of extreme old age.

A fun Disney production, perfect for an unforgettable fall afternoon with the family. Plus, its sequel is coming to Disney+ this fall.
  • Little Women
"Little Women," an adaptation of the classic by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of four sisters—Amy, Jo, Beth, and Meg—who live humbly with their mother in a cozy house in the northern United States. Their father has gone off to fight in the Civil War, and the family struggles to survive as best they can.

The cheerful sisters each have artistic vocations and youthful aspirations. And during their adolescence, they discover love and the importance of family ties. Meanwhile, they become close friends with Laurie, their wealthy neighbor who always supports them in their crazy adventures.

A true classic transformed into a modern ode to femininity, in a nostalgic and melancholic atmosphere very appropriate for autumn.
  • Nightmare Before Christmas
Another classic to watch this time of year and enjoy Halloween with the kids. A film directed by Tim Burton that you can enjoy on Disney+.

When Jack Skellington, the Lord of Halloween, discovers Christmas, he is fascinated and decides to improve it. However, his vision of the holiday is completely contrary to the Christmas spirit. His plans include kidnapping Santa Claus and introducing some rather macabre changes. Only his girlfriend Sally is aware of the mistake he's making.

A wonderful animated story, a must-see before the Christmas season arrives.

  • The Lord of the Rings
A modern fantasy classic written by JRR Tolkien and considered one of the best film trilogies ever, directed by Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings is a story that has captivated millions of people for decades. And Middle-earth is an amazing place that will fascinate the children in your home.

In a nutshell, "The Lord of the Rings" tells the story of Frodo Baggins, a young hobbit with a simple, quiet life who, overnight, is tasked with an important mission that will determine the fate of all of Middle-earth. His uncle Bilbo had possessed the One Ring, Sauron's most lethal weapon, for years. But it turns out the Dark Lord has returned and desires the ring to seize power over all of Middle-earth. Frodo must travel to Mordor with his friend Sam to destroy the One Ring with the same fire it was forged from. And thus save the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.
  • Halloweentown
Another ideal Halloween-themed movie to enjoy with the family this fall. Marnie is tired of her mother Gwen's overprotectiveness, who refuses to let her go out on Halloween like other teenagers, much less decorate her house spookily. Marnie also lives with her brother Dylan and her little sister Sophie. What Marnie doesn't know is that her mother's family comes from a magical town called Halloweentown.

  • Edward Scissorhands
Tim Burton's films are ideal for enjoying this time of year. Among his entire filmography, one of the most notable is "Edward Scissorhands."

This film tells the story of an artificially created man named Edward, who has scissors instead of hands. Edward is adopted by a middle-class family living in an idyllic residential neighborhood and falls in love with their daughter, Kim.

These are some of the movies you can enjoy together on the couch this fall. Watching movies or series inspired by this season is a great way to get excited for the arrival of the season. Plus, these family evenings help strengthen the bonds.
