Taking Action Against Bullying: A Comprehensive Guide for Parents and Teachers

School bullying, also known as harassment, is a problem that affects an alarming number of children in Spain: 7 out of 10 , according to the first study conducted by Bullying Without Borders . This phenomenon can manifest itself in various ways, inside and outside the classroom, during recess, in bathrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, and even on social media. Children can be victims of bullying anywhere, at any time. At Savefamily, we are very aware of this issue and want to share this information to avoid and prevent these situations.

As adults, parents, and teachers, it's our responsibility to be informed and take action to prevent, identify, and address bullying . Below is a comprehensive guide that combines advice for parents and teachers on how to respond to bullying and how to detect it.

Detecting bullying:

It's important to remember that any child can be bullied, whether they're an outstanding student or someone with special physical characteristics. Bullying is often directed toward those who stand out in some way or are perceived as different.

Mood swings are often one of the indicators of bullying: Observe your child or students and pay special attention to their behavior. Do they seem tired, sad, fearful, or more irritable? This can also indicate physical signs such as bruises, torn clothing, or missing belongings.

As parents, discovering that our child is a victim of bullying can be devastating. Our first reaction is often to tell the child to ignore the situation or defend themselves, but this approach can make the victim feel even more vulnerable.

How to act against bullying :

If you suspect your child is being bullied, here are some tips:

-Ask your child how you think you can help and reassure them that you are there for them.

- Listen to your child and assure him that he has the right to feel safe and happy.

- Report the bullying to the teachers and school principal, sharing what you know and asking what action the school will take.

- Teach your child how to respond to bullying . Help them minimize the impact by effectively ignoring the bully.

-If the bullying involves sexual harassment, physical assault, or serious threats, consider reporting it to the police .

- Seek support from organizations like the Spanish Association for the Prevention of Bullying , which can provide guidance and support in the fight against bullying.

What if I'm told my child is bullying another child?

Discovering that your child is being singled out as the bully in a bullying situation can be a heartbreaking experience for any parent. It's crucial to address this issue effectively to encourage behavioral change and ensure they understand the consequences of their actions.

- Stay calm : Despite your emotions, listen with empathy without impulsive or defensive reactions.

- Talk openly and honestly : Start a sincere conversation with your child about the situation and listen to their version.

- Understand the causes : Investigate the reasons behind their behavior, such as peer pressure or emotional problems.

- Set clear boundaries : Make it clear that bullying is not acceptable and that there are consequences for their actions.

- Encourage empathy : Help your child understand the feelings of others by asking questions that encourage empathy.

- Collaborate with the school : Work with the school to address the problem, participating in meetings with school staff.

- Seek professional help if necessary : If your child needs additional support, consult a counselor or child therapist.

- Monitor and support change : Keep a close eye on their behavior and celebrate improvements.

- Promote responsibility : Encourage him to take responsibility for his actions and apologize if appropriate.

- Educate about bullying : Talk about the negative consequences of bullying and the importance of respect and empathy towards others.

Confronting bullying is a commitment we all must make. By listening, understanding, and acting with empathy, we can make a difference in our children's lives. Let's work together to create a world free of bullying, where all children can grow up safe and happy equally.
